A trio of officers lost their lives and at least 15 others got wounded in a seemingly intentional blast caused by gas at a country home in Italy's north.

How It Happened

The detonation was triggered as police and firefighters entered the house close to the city of Verona to carry out an eviction order for two brothers and a sister in their late 50s and mid-60s.

The three deceased individuals were members of the Italian military police.

Arrests and Aftermath

One male and one female got detained at the scene and another man who fled subsequent to the explosion was found shortly later. The trio have been admitted to medical facility.

The detonation could be heard as far as 3 miles distant and footage from the area revealed the building left as a heap of debris.

“This moment calls for sorrow,” commented the Minister of the Interior Minister Piantedosi, who mentioned that attempts had been made to evict the three siblings in the previous occasions.

Property Situation

The president of the region of Veneto, the regional head, stated the residence was facing an eviction order due to unpaid amounts accumulated by the siblings.

Conflict resolution experts had been dispatched to engage the family members who had barricaded themselves into the property. When the Carabinieri came just after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), authorities suspect one of the residents triggered the blast.

“As we went inside, we encountered a completely deranged action,” regional commander the police commander told the media.

A gas canister had been set off, and the detonation precisely impacted our officers,” he said.

Molotov cocktails were also discovered at the property, the minister stated.

Casualties and Damage

Those injured by the blast consisted of eleven more officers of the police force as well as a trio of personnel of the state police and a firefighter.

Based on information from the Verona prosecutor, the building was in a derelict state and had no electricity.

He was convinced the blast had happened on a floor above the access point and informed reporters it was a “intentional and planned killing”. Moments before the explosion, he mentioned members had “noticed a hissing sound, likely the propane tanks being turned on”.

Neighbor Statements

“We all knew the situation was dire,” nearby inhabitants told reporters, noting that the three had previously threatened to “cause an explosion” rather than be evicted.

“The blast resulted in a ‘horrific, deeply distressing and tragic cost’.”

Defence Minister Guido Crosetto united with other elected representatives in commemorating the three men who had been killed in the service of their country.
