Former US treasury secretary Lawrence Summers is departing from the governing body at OpenAI, just a week after a collection of emails between him and notorious criminal the accused trafficker became publicly available.

Summers remarked in an announcement that he was "appreciative for the privilege to have served, enthusiastic about the prospects of the organization, and look forward following their development".

The former Harvard president, who formerly headed the Ivy League institution, declared on recently that he would be stepping back from public responsibilities due to his relationship with Jeffrey Epstein.

The recently released messages showed that the official communicated with Jeffrey Epstein until the eve of his 2019 detention for accused human trafficking of young people.

In another announcement, the technology organization expressed it respected the economist's decision to depart.

This development comes after the two houses of the US legislature decided on Tuesday to endorse a measure that would mandate the federal prosecutors to disclose its files on the case.
