Former Treasury Secretary Summers Leaves from OpenAI Board
Former US treasury secretary Lawrence Summers is departing from the governing body at OpenAI, just a week after a collection of emails between him and notorious criminal the accused trafficker became publicly available.
Summers remarked in an announcement that he was "appreciative for the privilege to have served, enthusiastic about the prospects of the organization, and look forward following their development".
The former Harvard president, who formerly headed the Ivy League institution, declared on recently that he would be stepping back from public responsibilities due to his relationship with Jeffrey Epstein.
Email Communications
The recently released messages showed that the official communicated with Jeffrey Epstein until the eve of his 2019 detention for accused human trafficking of young people.
In another announcement, the technology organization expressed it respected the economist's decision to depart.
"We appreciate his numerous inputs and the perspective he brought to the Board," the organization commented.
Political Context
This development comes after the two houses of the US legislature decided on Tuesday to endorse a measure that would mandate the federal prosecutors to disclose its files on the case.
The bill will afterward head to the desk of the White House for approval. The President has indicated he plans to approve the legislation, after reversing his stance on the issue following objections from his followers.

A group of Epstein-related emails disclosed by the Congressional committee last week mentioned numerous prominent individuals in the billionaire's previous network, without implying any legal wrongdoing by those individuals.
The emails showed that Summers and the financier regularly had dinners together, with the billionaire often seeking to link the official to prominent international personalities.

After the correspondence were shared with the public, Summers stated he took "total ownership for my poor decision to maintain interacting with Jeffrey Epstein".
He further stated that he desired "to rebuild confidence and fix connections with the people most important to me".
Professional History
The professor occupied high-level positions under two Democratic presidents; acting as economic leader under Bill Clinton, and as director of the National Economic Council under the former leader.
He presided over the institution from the early 2000s and continues to be a academic there. When announcing his departure from public commitments previously on Monday, he indicated he would continue his teaching commitments.
Further Repercussions
Following the economist's announcement on Monday, the Center for American Progress, a progressive research organization in DC where Summers was a researcher, verified that Summers was not connected with the organization.
The former official joined the leadership of the AI company, which creates ChatGPT, in last year - following a unsuccessful effort to oust its CEO Sam Altman.
